São Paulo Fashion Week

São Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW) is a Brazilian fashion event organised through editions, with a history that begins in 1995 and adopts the current name in 2001. SPFW N58 shows how one edition combines dates, venues, curation, an honouree and brand narratives without turning those details into permanent rules for the event.

What is São Paulo Fashion Week?

São Paulo Fashion Week (SPFW) is a Brazilian fashion event organised through editions. Its first edition took place in 1995 in São Paulo, and the historical record associates its conception with Paulo Borges and its production with Grupo Luminosidade. The event brings together Brazilian designers and labels, models, celebrities, media outlets, guests and fashion buyers. The right unit of analysis is the recurring platform: one edition, one collection or one runway show does not exhaust what the event is.

How did the event develop and change its name?

The Brazilian fashion week began using the name São Paulo Fashion Week in 2001. That change separates the current identity from earlier phases of the calendar, which appear in the history under other names. Its participant mix explains why a fashion week involves presentation, coverage and professional relationships in addition to runway imagery. For the adjacent graph, compare fashion week, runway show and fashion market.

What does SPFW N58 document about one edition?

The official SPFW page announced that edition N58 would take place from 16 to 21 October 2024. The same announcement placed the edition at the Pavilhão das Culturas Brasileiras in Ibirapuera Park, Iguatemi São Paulo and external venues around the city. Dates and venues belong to that edition’s announcement; they are not a permanent calendar for every SPFW edition.

The communication identifies Renato de Cara as curator of the visual-arts programme and Regina Guerreiro as the honoured journalist, editor and creative director. Keeping curator and honouree distinct prevents a local collaboration from becoming a permanent title. The institutional text also presents memory as a way to recognise the recent history of Brazilian fashion and strengthen it as a collective.

ELLE Brasil adds a brand-level example: À La Garçonne returned to the N58 runway on 20 October 2024, while Fábio Souza was celebrating two decades in fashion and 15 years of the label. The example shows how one edition connects the event programme to individual designer and brand trajectories without allowing one trajectory to define SPFW as a whole.

Why does SPFW matter to Brazilian fashion?

SPFW matters as a meeting point between the event’s history, one edition’s programme and the circulation of designers, images and professional audiences. To study its relation to fashion collection, Brazilian fashion and São Paulo, keep the edition and period beside the statement being consulted.

This separation clarifies the calendar: the long history answers where the event comes from; an edition page answers what was announced for when and where; brand coverage answers how a participant appears in that specific frame. SPFW N58 makes the three scales visible by combining its own period and venues with named curation, an honouree and fashion-media coverage of a brand. The event can therefore be studied without confusing institutional identity, a located programme and a participant’s trajectory.
